    Future-Proofind Your Home

    Essential Electrical Upgrades

Approximately 70% of buildings in America will need to be electrically retrofitted in the next five to ten years. We offer a wide range of electrical services to meet your needs, from main panel upgrades, to rewiring, to large appliance circuit installations.

Most older homes built prior to 1990s are equipped with 100 amp service panels; as such, meaningful electrical updates begin with a main service and panel upgrade. Upgrading your service ensures that homes have enough amperage (ideally 200 amps) to support future installations of ev chargers, induction stoves, heat-pump water heaters, etc.

    We recommend these electrical upgrades:

    Upgrading Your Electrical Service

    Main Panel Service Upgrade

Homes built before 1990s were commonly equipped with 100 amp main panels and service lines. Upgrading from 100 to 200 amp service requires two things: replacing the old panel, and work with the utility company to upgrade the service line.

Upgrade costs are dependent on the profile of the existing main panel and whether the service wire is overhead or underground. In terms of timeline, from beginning to end it usually takes 1 to 2 months from meter spot (see below), to installation, to inspection, to utility company switch out of the service wire.

    Main Panel Upgrade Steps

    1. Meter Spot (1 to 2 weeks)

Required by utility companies to approve the power delivery location.
    2. Permit and Plans Submission (1 week)

Electrical Building Permits are required for panel upgrades.
    3. Panel Upgrade (2 to 3 days)

Be prepared to be without electricity for half a day.
    4. Inspection and Permitting (1 week)

Once upgrade is completed, an inspection is usually required.
    5. Utility Service Upgrade (1 to 3 weeks)

The utility company will be alerted and will come and upsize the service line.

    Upgrade to Energy Efficient Appliances

    Large Appliance Circuits

With a 200 amp (or more) electrical panel, there are options to upgrade or add efficient appliances. Popular options include:

    • Induction Range

    • Tankless or Heat-Pump Water Heaters

    • Electric W&D

    • Pool Equipment and Saunas

Many of these electric appliances qualify for federal tax credit, and may receive additional incentives from state or local utilities. Most large appliances require dedicated 240-V circuits, either via an outlet or hardwire options.

Protect Your Home From Power Surges

    Whole-Home Surge Protector

Per the National Electric Code, surge protectors are now a requirement for all main service upgrades. A whole-home surge protector is used to prevent power surges in the event of sudden power outage. The most common electrical surges are caused by:

    • Grid black-outs and brown-outs

    • Lightning strikes

    • Faulty or damaged wires

    • Internal surges caused by appliance cycling on/off

Surges are costly events that can destroy appliances and electrical sockets, wiring, and circuits. Protect your home with a heavy duty whole-home surge protector to avoid the headaches and costs of fried appliances and wires.
